3. Trying To Burn The Sun

Description

Limited 180gm audiophile vinyl LP pressing. Elf was an American rock band founded by singer and bassist Ronnie James Dio, keyboardist Doug Thaler, drummer Gary Driscoll, and guitarists Nick Pantas and David Feinstein (Dio's cousin). The band was originally called The Electric Elves, but was shortened to The Elves and finally Elf in 1972. Elf disbanded in 1975 after recording three albums and after most of the lineup had been absorbed into Ritchie Blackmore's new group, Rainbow. Ronnie James Dio went on to a successful career in heavy metal, fronting Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell and his own band, Dio. David Feinstein also found a career in metal, leading the band The Rods for a number of years. Original keyboardist Doug Thaler went on to a career in music management. Recorded while the band was evolving slowly into the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Trying to Burn the Sun is the third and final release from Elf, the band that finally earned Ronnie James Dio the attention he had been seeking since the late 1950s. After writing and recording a few singles for Blackmore, Dio and Elf were solidly moving in a heavier musical direction. Trying to Burn the Sun is a great listen for all fans of 70s rock, not only Dio and Rainbow fans.

August Burns Red seventh studio album, Phantom Anthem, sees the band embark on a new chapter, all the while expanding on the success of their last studio album Found In Far Away Places (2015). While some may feel like outcasts, or appear to be off track and going nowhere, the album highlights that its whats inside that really matters the passion thats beneath the surface is what is actually of value, not the circumstances or physical evidence seen on the surface. In turn, August Burns Red breathes new life in Phantom Anthem, displaying their own passion and further solidifying their impressive expertise as musicians and lyricists with their iconic, ferociously heavy sound.

7. Burn Your Fire For No Witness

Description

On her 2014 LP, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, Angel Olsen sings with full-throated exultation, admonition, and bold, expressive melody. With the help of producer John Congleton, her music now crackles with a churning, rumbling low end and a brighter energy.

Angel Olsen began singing as a young girl in St. Louis. Her self-released debut EP, Strange Cacti, belied both that early period of discovery and her Midwestern roots. Olsen then went further on Half Way Home, her first full-length album (released on Bathetic Records), which mined essential themes while showcasing a more developed voice. Olsen dared to be more personal.

After extensive touring, Olsen eventually settled for a time in Chicago s Logan Square neighborhood, where she created "a collection of songs grown in a year of heartbreak, travel, and transformation," that would become Burn Your Fire For No Witness. Many of them remain essentially unchanged from their bare beginnings. In leaving them so intact, a more self-assured Olsen allows us to be in the room with her at the very genesis of these songs. Our reward for entering this room is many a head-turning moment and the powerful, unsettling recognition of ourselves in the weave of her songs.

10. Burn Band

Description

There's a mythical, fraternal pair known only as the Stryker Brothers whose ghostly chords and verses have haunted the desolate Texas prairies for decades. There isn't much known about the brothers. No legal records of the two exist. It was only a year ago that a set of original, reel-to-reel tapes were discovered. Those who had come across the Stryker Brother's music before the tapes were discovered were rumored to be transfixed by what they'd heard... drawn in like moth to flame. Entranced. Many drove for days into the barren Texas landscape to feel closer to the Strykers' ghostly serenade, some never to return. So, what happened to the brothers? Did they really perish in a prison fire? Did they go into hiding? Are they ghosts, earth-bound, playing for eternity under a lonely Texas sky? Perhaps we'll never know, but it is said that during the hottest Texas summer nights -- if you listen carefully -- you can hear their intoxicating melodies playing amid the moonlit shadows on those desolate desert plains.
