Description

Patchouli (Pogostemon heyneanus) This fragrant herb from India is famous for its use in perfumery. When you rub the leaves, they emit an exotic scent. It is a fast grower that has a bushy form and takes well to hard pruning. Grow it in full sun and even if you forget to water it on occasion, it is forgiving. Hardiness Zone 10 Bloom Season Fall Sun Requirement Full Sun Grows to 12" Minimum Temperature Indoors 40 Plant Type Fragrant Light: Full sun, a southern exposure is best, although an east or west window will do if southern exposure is not available. Temperature: Maintain indoor temperatures above 40?. Humidity: Preferably 50% of higher; however, they will tolerate low levels with no harm. Watering: Bring soil to a state of visual dryness between watering. When watering, thoroughly saturate soil until a little water runs out of the bottom of the pot. Try to prevent them from wilting severely; however, a slight wilt should not hurt. Growing in a clay pot will help maintain a healthy root system. Fertilizer: Fertilize using tsp of fertilizer per gallon of water every two weeks, or if grown under high light, tsp of fertilizer per gallon of water every week. They are rapid growers; so if growth becomes excessive, reduce the amount of fertilizer given. Pruning: They are rapid growers, especially under high fertility and warm conditions. Whenever growth is excessive, they can be pruned back hard, as they respond well to severe pruning, becoming thicker and bushier. Insects and Disease: For the most part, they are not susceptible to insects and diseases. Occasionally, if white fly infected plants are nearby the bugs will feed on them.
