1. Link Wray's 3-Track Shack

Feature

Shrink-wrapped

Description

A 2CD set featuring three albums Link Wray recorded in the early 70s. Wray, his brother Vernon and band decamped to his farm in Maryland where Vernon set up a three-track recorder in an outhouse - the eponymous three-track shack. Three albums resulted from the recording sessions. The music was radically different to what Link had previously recorded - raw and basic, but with vocals and acoustic instruments. His fan base didn't quite know what to make of it - resulting in these albums being the rarest of Link's catalogue. These three albums have appeared on a 2CD set before but one track was not the correct one and all three albums were dubbed from LPs. This time, Ace has managed to track down the master tapes for all three and, at some expense; we present them in the finest sound possible.

3. Rumbling Guitar Sound - Link Wray

Description

Showing you don t need to be a technical virtuoso to alter the face of modern music, Link Wray stands tall as one of rock's most influential figures. Inadvertently inventing the fuzz tone by meeting a pencil and amplifier cone, Wray s biggest hit Rumble remains a signpost to modern rock having an influence on acts as diverse as The Who to The White Stripes.

4. Essential Recordings

Description

5. Jack The Ripper - The Singles 1957-1962 Plus [ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED]

Description

Link Wray conquered ill health (he suffered partially impaired hearing and eyesight and had only one lung) to become one of the most influential R&R guitarists of all time. He famously harnessed power chords and distortion to create an entirely new, brutal sound and style. Rock luminaries like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Neil Young, Iggy Pop, The Cramps, Jack Rose and JD McPherson have all acknowledged Link's crucial role. This compilation anthologises all his singles released between 1957-1962, plus various album tracks and rarities, including 45s recorded by Link, but credited to his brother Ray Vernon. Features the million selling singles "Rumble" and "Raw-Hide" plus regional hits like "Comanche", "Lillian" and "Slinky", and the original version of "Jack The Ripper", which would become a hit following its re-issue in 1963. Also includes rare earlier recordings, his debut 45 "I Sez Baby" / "Johnny Bom Bonny" and the unissued "Hillybilly Wolf". His records have appeared in iconic movies like Pulp Fiction, Breathless, Independence Day, Pink Flamingos, Roadracers, Desperado, Blow, Streets Of Fire, 12 Monkeys etc.

6. Link Wray & His Wraymen

Description

Digitally re-mastered edition of this 1960 album including 16 bonus tracks. Link Wray was perhaps the first important instrumental rock musician to feature the power chord prominently. His impact has been felt throughout almost every genre of music for the last five decades (from Rock 'n' Roll to Garage, Country, Blues, Punk, Grunge and Surf music). Link Wray's sound, style and career stood at an intersection of Rock 'n' Roll, the rise of the guitar instrumental, the cult of the juvenile delinquent, and modernity in general. This quintessential collector's edition contains Wray's magnificent and essential debut album, Link Wray & the Wraymen plus 16 bonus tracks consisting of alternate takes, demos and hard to find sides from his early and best years on the Epic and Cadence labels. Here is the material upon which Wray's unique reputation was built. Hoo Doo Records.

7. Shadowman

Description

With the roar of the opening track, "Rumble On the Docks," the 68-year-old rock & roll guitar legend proves he's back in a big way. Backed up by a spartan bass and drums rhythm section, Link comes to the plate here with nine new originals in his classic, abrasive style, along with covers of John Fogerty's "Run Through the Jungle," "Heartbreak Hotel" and Hank Williams' "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You)." On "Timewarp/Brain Damage," the recasts the old lick from "Rawhide" in a new speed metal version, and with an album split fairly evenly between his raw vocals and bone-crunching guitar, this album is his most cohesive in years. While other artists from the '50s attempt to move into country or easy listening, Wray's style hasn't altered one bit over the intervening years, and this one finds him kicking and clawing his way into the next century. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide
